Google have announced the introduction of stricter guidelines
for apps on its Android platform. The guidelines prevent apps from
having icons which are "confusingly similar".
Competing developers will be unable to use the same image as the
icon of an app. This means that the intellectual property of the
image in question is now of increased importance for app
developers. If a developer lodges an app with an icon incorporating
something in which a competing developer holds intellectual
property rights, the developer whose rights have been infringed
will need to compel the other developer to change the icon of the
app.
These new guidelines illustrate the increasing importance for
software developers to understand how to protect and promote their
intellectual property rights.
