As discussed in a previous blog, the Ministry of Consumer
Affairs launched a review of all New Zealand consumer laws in June
this year. The review looked at consolidating and simplifying our
Consumer legislation.
It also looked at reviewing the overall effectiveness of the
seven key consumer laws:
- Fair Trading Act 1986
- Consumer Guarantees Act 1993
- Weights and Measures Act 1987
- Auctioneers Act 1928
- Door to Door Sales Act 1967
- Layby Sales Act 1971
- Unsolicited Goods and Services Act 1975.
Public submissions have now been made on this discussion paper
and a summary of the submissions has been released by the
Ministry. Click here for a copy.
Based on this summary, likely changes to our consumer
legislation include an enhanced Fair Trading Act, with the other
Acts remaining separate with some individual amendment. The
initial suggestion of at least amalgamating the Fair Trading Act,
Consumer Guarantees Act and Weights and Measures Act appears to
have found little favour in the public submissions.
